About Lester Leavitt
The origin story of the Driftless Rivers Coalition strangely began more than 20 years ago, with the publication of the first edition of Lester's memoir, "Forbidden Friends."
The title of the book is derived from how Lester’s upbringing in the cult-like environment of a small, hyper-religious rural community led him to see the world in terms of everything that was “forbidden.” Because he knew that he was gay by the age of 13, making friends with guys came with the risk that he might “out” himself. The consequences would have had devastating consequences for everybody near and dear to him.
